Cheryl A. Brandt, MSN, RN, ACNS-BC, CORLN is a program manager of head and neck cancer and clinical nurse specialist at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Ireland Cancer Center in Cleveland, Ohio. In addition, Ms Brandt is also a clinical faculty instructor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Ms Brandt earned a bachelor’s of science degree in nursing from Ursuline College in Pepper Pike, Ohio and a master’s of science degree in nursing from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, where she later received her post masters teaching certificate.

Ms Brandt has been recognized for a number of her clinical accomplishments. She has participated in designing a multidisciplinary clinic for head and neck cancer patients at University Hospitals of Cleveland. She is responsible for patient education and organizing and running clinics for head and neck surgeons and multidisciplinary teams.

Ms Brandt is a member of a number of professional societies such as the Society of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Cancer Nursing, the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists, and the National League for Nursing. Ms Brandt has lectured nationally and her work has been published in the ORL-Head and Neck Nursing. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International and has been awarded the “Best of the Best” award from the Northeast Ohio Nurses.

Terry A. Day, MD is director of the Division of Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery and a professor in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. Dr Day received his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City. He completed residency at Louisiana State University in Shreveport, Louisiana and fellowships in head and neck oncologic surgery at the University of California, Davis and craniomaxillofacial surgery at Inselspital-Bern in Bern, Switzerland. Following his fellowships, Dr Day joined the faculty in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

Dr Day is the director of the Head and Neck Tumor Program at Hollings Cancer Center. His clinical interests include the treatment of head and neck tumors in children and adults, microvascular reconstructive surgery, and skull-based surgery.

Dr Day serves on the board of directors for the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAOHNS) and is a member of the AAOHNS Head and Neck Surgery and Oncology Committee, the Skull Base Surgery Committee, and the Humanitarian Efforts Committee. In addition, he is actively involved in a number of local and regional boards and committees. Dr Day is a reviewer for several journals including the American Journal of Otolaryngology and the Annals of Surgical Oncology and has published numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts, review articles, and book chapters. Dr Day volunteers his time as president of the Yul Brynner Head and Neck Cancer Foundation and, in 1998, founded the first Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week, which is now an annually occurring international event.

Edward S. Kim, MD is an associate professor of medicine in the Department of Thoracic/Head and Neck Medical Oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. He also holds the position of chief, Section of Head and Neck Medical Oncology and serves as the director of Clinical Research Operations in the department.

Dr Kim received his bachelor of science and medical degrees from the Honors Program in Medical Education at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, 1996. Dr Kim completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, 1996-1999, and his fellowship in medical oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, 1999-2001.

Dr Kim serves as principal investigator on numerous clinical studies including the Department of Defense Biomarker-based Approaches of Targeted Therapy for Lung Cancer Elimination (BATTLE) or personalized medicine program in lung cancer. Dr Kim studies novel targeted agents in the treatment and prevention settings and has expertise in lung, head and neck, as well as thymic cancers.

Dr Kim is a member of numerous associations and societies, including ASCO, AACR, SWOG, and the Texas Medical Society. Dr Kim is also the recipient of several awards including the Young Investigators Award from ASCO in 2002, the Merit Award from ASCO in 2002, and the Scholar in Training Award from AACR in 2002.

Dr Kim is the author or coauthor of more than 100 published articles, book chapters, reviews, and abstracts in journals such as Lancet, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Cancer, and Cancer Prevention Research, involving cancer therapeutics and prevention with chemotherapy and novel targeted agents, with particular emphases on lung cancer and head and neck cancer.

David I. Rosenthal, MD, FACR is professor of radiation oncology at the University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center, in Houston, Texas. Dr Rosenthal earned his medical degree from the University of Miami in Miami, Florida. His post-doctoral training included an internship in general surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida, and a three-year residency in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals of Cleveland in Cleveland, Ohio. He later completed a residency in radiation oncology at University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Dr Rosenthal is also a fellow of the American College of Radiology in Washington, DC. In addition to his academic appointments, Dr Rosenthal is the section chief of Head and Neck Radiation Oncology and director of the Head and Neck Translational Research Department at the University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center, in Houston, Texas.

Dr Rosenthal focuses on translational research including the identification of tumor and patient characteristics that can be validated as tools for treatment selection and symptom prevention. In particular, Dr Rosenthal is interested in functional organ preservation using techniques and drugs along with radiation that sensitize tumors to the effects of radiation or protect the normal tissues from radiation therapy side effects. Dr Rosenthal is a member of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group and the principal or co-investigator of several on-going clinical protocols.

Dr Rosenthal is actively involved in a number of professional societies including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, and the American Head and Neck Society. In addition, he serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Oral Oncology, and the American Journal of Clinical Oncology. Dr Rosenthal is the author or coauthor of more than 100 peer-reviewed research articles, 10 book chapters, and numerous reviews, editorials, and abstracts.
