Rafat Abonour, MD is professor of medicine, pathology, and laboratory medicine and associate dean of clinical research at Indiana University in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dr Abonour is also medical director of the Stem Cell Laboratory at Indiana University Medical Center. Dr Abonour earned his medical degree from the University of Damascus in Syria. He completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in hematology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin.
Dr Abonour established and directs the multiple myeloma and plasma cell program at Indiana University. His clinical interests include novel therapies for multiple myeloma and hematopoietic stem cell processing, including gene therapy. Dr Abonour is principal or co-investigator of several on-going clinical trials.
Dr Abonour is a member of the Eastern Cooperative Group Data Monitoring Committee for Myeloma, the Scientific Research Committee at Indiana Cancer Center, and the Indiana University Executive Review Board. In addition, he is actively involved in a number of professional societies including the American Society of Hematology and the International Society of Hematology. Dr Abonour has authored or coauthored numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts, book chapters, and review articles. He has lectured nationally and internationally and received numerous awards, including the Trustee Teaching Award from Indiana University and the Excellence in Cancer Care Award from the Indianapolis Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. He also received the Sagamore of the Wabash award, the highest honor an Indiana governor can bestow for his work on multiple myeloma on behalf of his patients.

Sergio A. Giralt, MD is the chief of the Adult Bone Marrow Transplant Service in the Division of Hematologic Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, New York. He received his medical degree from Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas, Venezuela, and completed his postgraduate internship at the University Hospital of Caracas. He also completed an internal medicine residency at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio and a postdoctoral fellowship in hematology and oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Dr Giralt is board certified in internal medicine, hematology, and oncology. His clinical research interests include transplant for myeloma and minitransplant for acute leukemia. He is principal or co-investigator of several ongoing clinical protocols.
Dr Giralt is past chair of the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) and chair-elect of the Steering Committee for the Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network (BMT CTN). He is actively involved in many professional societies including the American Society of Hematology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, North American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation, and International Society of Hematology. Dr Giralt is a member of the Heme Malignancy Watch editorial board and has coauthored nearly 200 peer-reviewed journal articles, more than 230 abstracts, and numerous book chapters.
