Koen van Besien, MD, PhD is professor of medicine and pediatrics and director of stem cell transplantation and lymphoma at the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. Dr van Besien earned his medical degree from the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium and his doctorate degree from Maastricht University in the Netherlands. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Louvain in Belgium, followed by a fellowship in hematology and oncology at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Dr van Besien’s clinical research includes the study of novel conditioning regimens in hematologic malignancies, as well as immunotherapy approaches in allogeneic transplant. In the lymphoma program, his interest focuses on novel strategies in autologous and allogeneic transplantation. He is the principal investigator of several on-going clinical protocols.
Dr van Besien is a review board member of the Cancer and Leukemia Group B and is actively involved in a number of professional societies including the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Society of Bone Marrow Transplantation. In addition, he is the editor in chief for
Leukemia and Lymphoma,
and serves on the editorial board for
Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation.
Dr van Besien is the author or coauthor of more than 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 11 book chapters, and numerous editorials, reviews, and abstracts.
