Mitchell E. Horwitz, MD is an assistant professor in the department of medicine in the division of cellular therapy, adult bone marrow, and stem cell transplantation program at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. Dr Horwitz received his medical degree from Rush University College of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Northwestern University McGaw Medical Center in Chicago and a fellowship in hematology and oncology at the National Heart and Lung Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

Dr Horwitz is director of the inpatient stem cell transplant unit and an active clinical investigator. His research focuses on adult umbilical cord blood transplantation and post transplant immune recovery. He is also developing novel techniques involving graft manipulation to reduce the risk of graft versus host disease following allogeneic stem cell transplantation.

Dr Horwitz serves as co-chair of Immunodeficiency and Inborn Errors of Metabolism working group within the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research and is a member of the steering committee for the Bone Marrow Transplantation Clinical Trials Network, an NIH-sponsored consortium of stem cell transplant experts who design and conduct cutting edge clinical research. Dr Horwitz has published numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts, review articles, book chapters, and abstracts and was recently awarded the Lisa Stafford Memorial Prize for Research.
