Melissa Alsina, MD is an associate professor of oncology and medicine and head of the myeloma program at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa, Florida. Dr Alsina received her medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She completed her residency in medicine at San Juan Veterans Administrative Hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico and fellowships in hematology at San Juan City Hospital and in medical oncology/hematology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas.
Dr Alsina’s research interests include the pathogenesis of myeloma bone disease, interactions of myeloma cells with bone marrow stromal cells, and in vivo models for myeloma. Her clinical interests include multiple myeloma and bone marrow transplantation, and she is principal investigator on numerous clinical protocols and research grants.
Dr Alsina serves on a number of institutional committees and is actively involved in several professional societies. In addition, she is a member of the Multiple Myeloma Education and Support Group. Dr Alsina has published numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts, review articles, and book chapters. For her scientific and clinical efforts, Dr Alsina has received several honors and awards throughout her career, including the Upjohn Research Award and the Brian D. Novis award from the International Myeloma Foundation.
