Thomas J. Kipps, MD, PhD is the Evelyn and Edwin Tasch Chair in Cancer Research, a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and the deputy director of research at the Moores Cancer Center in La Jolla, California. Dr Kipps earned his MD and PhD in immunology from Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed his residency and fellowship training in internal medicine, hematology, and genetics at Stanford University in Stanford, California.

Dr Kipps’ research interests include human B cell physiology, with an emphasis on antigen presentation, accessory molecules, signal transduction, and immunoglobulin gene expression, and pathogenic mechanisms and novel immunotherapies for lymphoproliferative diseases. In addition, somatic cell transfection or transduction using plasmid DNA or viral expression vector for gene immunotherapy of neoplastic disease, and structure-function studies of immunoglobulin or accessory molecules involved in signal transduction or cognate cell-cell interactions.

Dr Kipps has been recognized, both nationally and internationally, for his work in cancer research, immunology, and gene therapy. He is the author of more than 200 publications and is the principal investigator on several peer-reviewed grants, including the multi-institution Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Consortium funded by the National Cancer Institute/National Institutes of Health. Dr Kipps is a member and co-chair of the International Workshop of CLL, and also a member of the scientific advisory boards for the Lymphoma Research Foundation and the CLL Global Research Foundation.
